Reader’s Question:

I would like to know if there is any hard and fast rule in determining auto insurance premiums. I have auto insurance policy in Portland Maine.

Sandra

Portland, ME

Hello, Sandra.

Auto insurance costs have been affected by the rising cost of auto repairs and medical care in recent years. Auto insurance company must submit their request to the state’s Insurance Commissioner if they want to increase its insurance rates. They must also include enough financial information to justify the rate increase. Rate analysts will review the facts provided by insurers and will approve the request if they find them congruent to the laws of Maine.

In addition to that, auto insurance companies may change the way their rates vary based on a number of factors such as address, age, gender, and driving history. Auto insurance rates can be based on many factors. Premium rates is made up of a base rate, plus/minus certain pegged amounts relevant to age, marital status, gender, driving patterns, claims history, credit history, geographical area, model, year, and make of the vehicle insured.
Weight on these factors would vary from one company to another. For a more accurate explanation on ratings, you can ask your local auto insurance agent in Portland Maine for appointment so you will better understand.
You may also start shopping for free quotes online so you can compare premium rates. Enter your zip code on the relevant space found in this page.

Reader’s Question:

Will my insurance rate go up if I don’t pay my car insurance premium this month, and allow it to get it cancelled, and then change car insurance carrier next month?

Julia

Portland, ME

Yes, it is possible that your insurance rates would go up if you allowed your current car insurance policy to get cancelled for non-payment and a month later decided to obtain car insurance with a new insurer.

A new insurance company may be wary to take your business if they would see that you have previously not paid fully on your insurance policy and allowed it to cancel for nonpayment. Being more of a risk in this way could cause an insurance company to not either want to accept your business or will make your insurance rate higher.

If you no longer want car insurance through your current insurance company then you should notify them and terminate your policy. But before doing so you will want to get a new auto insurance policy to cover your vehicle so that there will not be a lapse in coverage.

Reader’s Question:

What are the state laws in Maine on insurance of a vehicle? If insurance lapses will my vehicle registration be suspended in Portland ME? Do insurance providers actually report to the state of Maine if insurance is lapsed?

Beth

Portland, ME

A individual may not register a vehicle in Maine unless the individual satisfies the Secretary of State that the car is covered by a liability insurance policy. Violation of this section of the law is a traffic violation, for which a forfeiture of not less than $100 and not more than $500.

A car owner is mandated to have the State minimum liability coverage of $50,000/$100,000/$25,000 in Maine.

Yes, in Maine insurance providers are required to notify the ME Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) when an individual’s insurance has lapsed, cancelled or otherwise has been terminated. If this has been done you must show proof of active insurance to avoid suspension of your driving privilege. Without this the auto owner’s registration certificate and plates for the uninsured car will be suspended.

Reader’s Question:

What is the penalty in the state of Maine for driving without insurance and registration?

Amy

Portland, ME

The penalties for driving without insurance and registration in the state of Maine are quite severe. A registration that is expired will get you a summons and warning. If the vehicle has not been registered at all or within the last 150 days and you are stopped by a police officer it will be considered a Class E crime. In Maine a Class E crime can permit you to be arrested and go before a district court judge. Class E offense is six months if found guilty.

In Maine, being convicted of driving without insurance is a traffic violation (and also a Class E crime) for which a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $500 may be assessed. Your vehicle and license registration can also be suspended. The suspension will go on until financial responsibility is proven and there are other requirements that might be compulsory. You might then have a restricted license for a time period of time also.

Q: I’d like to get cheap Portland SR22 car insurance for the car I’ll be buying. What kind of car would you suggest for this?

A: If you plan on buying a car, you need to find out what the quotes will be for your Portland SR22 car insurance coverage before you go to buy it, so even if you do end up getting a cheap kind of car, you can’t be sure if your car insurance company and others will give you a good price. Stick to what you want, but also remember what you need when making your final choice for your new car.

As for the actual newness of your vehicle, don’t be so quick to buy a model which is hot out of the factory. Newer cars are both more expensive to buy and will also be a higher cost for you to insure because they cost more to replace. Avoid those shiny new cars and head over to the part of the lot where the equally shiny and great quality certified pre owned cars are sitting, and pick one of those instead.

If you want a truck, make sure you get a smaller one. Same with an SUV. It’s better to avoid those body types altogether though, and the car which will get you the best Portland SR22 prices will probably be a mid sized sedan or hatchback.

Q: How can I save money on my Portland Maine SR22 policy by improving my credit history?

A: There are a lot of benefits in improving your credit history, beyond just getting better rates on your Portland Maine SR22 policy, but the cheaper car insurance premium certainly is a perk. One of the main things you need to prove to your car insurance company through your credit report, though, is that you are responsible. So, consider who you want to impress when your paying your debts off.

It might be in your best interest, if you’re applying for a loan or a credit card, to pay off your debts as soon as possible. But if you’re set for all of that for the next several years and just want to impress your Portland Maine SR22 car insurance company, try to pay off your debts in regular payments rather than all at once. Car insurance companies base their score on the regularity of your payments and not on whether everything has been paid off.

You will also need to make sure that everything on your report that shouldn’t be there gets off. If you see something strange, don’t panic, just write to your credit agency and request that they send you proof that this belongs to you. If they can’t do it, it comes off your report.

Q: How come companies can use credit scores for Maine SR22 policy rating?

A: Maine SR22 car insurance companies choose to use credit scoring to rate their policies because research study after research study has shown that, despite the fact that credit would seemingly have nothing to do with driving abilities or anything related, people who have a bad credit history have proved themselves more likely to file claims. Because of how the Maine SR22 isnurance business is structured, those who are more likely to take money out of the system have to pay more in, so people with bad credit pay more.

Companies are able to use your credit report to rate their Maine SR22 car insurance policies because many judges have ruled that it is an acceptable practice. Even so, there is a lot of opposition to the use of credit scoring when rating policies, and many people put forward the accusation that such practices are discriminatory. They say this is because the people who are most affected by the negative rating of bad credit Maine SR22 policies tend to be minority and low income drivers, which they say is targeting these groups.

Q: I only drive a company car for work, so since I can’t get non owner Maine SR22, I can just be fine with the insurance coverage my company provides for me?

A: Not so fast! It may not be readily apparent, but non owner Maine SR22 insurance is actually something that exists and is available to you. If you like, you can definitely get such a policy, and will in fact have to unless you want the Maine DMV to suspend your driver’s license. Your company’s insurance may be helpful, and it will cover you, but it will not serve as proof of insurance for your car insurance company since it will only cover that one car and they can’t take your word for it that you won’t be driving oher vehicles.

Many companies can sell you a Maine non owner SR22 policy, although you may have to dig a little deeper in your pockets to find the funds. Since the age, safety features, and so on of the car you’re driving for work will not be considered when rating the policy, it will automatically be more expensive in anticipation of a risky range of cars. Make sure you look into discounts and add them onto your policy so that you can save some money.
